It is with profound sadness that the Hackensack community mourns the passing of Gordon “Scooter” Whiting, beloved athletic director, former football and basketball coach, mentor, and lifelong supporter of Hackensack athletics.
Whiting, who served the Hackensack School District with dedication and pride for many years, passed away on Friday, May 15. He was married to Dr. Joy Whiting, principal of Hackensack Middle School.
To generations of student-athletes, Scooter was far more than a coach. He was a mentor who believed in young people before they believed in themselves. Through football, basketball, and everyday life, he taught discipline, accountability, perseverance, and pride. His influence extended far beyond the field, helping shape the character and future of countless students throughout the community.
The Hackensack Football community described him as the “definition of a Comet for Life,” reflecting the loyalty, toughness, brotherhood, and tradition he represented so faithfully. Whether in the locker room, school hallways, or community gatherings, Coach Whiting made people feel supported, encouraged, and valued.
Friends, former players, and colleagues remember Scooter for his larger-than-life presence, his unwavering commitment to the school community, and the genuine care he showed to everyone he encountered. His impact cannot be measured by wins and losses alone, but by the countless lives he inspired and uplifted.
Jennifer Harris reflected on his legacy by describing him as a beloved coach, leader, mentor, and friend who truly embodied “Comet Pride” both on and off the field.
As the Hackensack community grieves this tremendous loss, they also celebrate a life devoted to service, mentorship, and community spirit.
Gordon “Scooter” Whiting will be forever remembered, deeply missed, and always honored.
May he rest in peace.
